Fun Vocabulary Games to Improve Literacy

Kristin Edmonds, M.M., M.A., CCC-SLP presented workshops at three Bradburn’s stores in Saint Louis, MO on July 9, 2009.  She discussed the importance of social interaction and oral language exposure for vocabulary development, and highlighted some evidence-based methods of teaching vocabulary. Visitors to the store had the opportunity to participate in some interactive wordplay using high frequency words and Tier 2 vocabulary words which are important for literacy.  The wordplay activities were suitable for classroom interventions for at-risk students.  Bradburn’s staff helped teachers find materials in the store which were related to wordplay for literacy and vocabulary.
